What do you need to start fermenting?

When you start fermenting, they say all you need is salt and time. True—but here are additional items to make fermentation a little easier. 

  • Chef’s knife
  • Chopping board
  • Fermentation jars such as Mason jars or clip-top types
  • Mixing bowls
  • Masking tape and permanent marker to label your ferments
  • Kitchen towel
Nice to have
  • Plastic or wooden spoon
  • Vegetable peeler (optional)
  • Kitchen scale (especially if you plan to make ferments regularly)
  • Non-reactive/plastic strainer
  • One set of measuring spoons
  • One set of measuring cups 
  • Wide-mouthed non-reactive/plastic funnel
  • Bottle brush
